Purple ribbons are around town to remind the community of the Aug. 31st "Celebration of Life" taking place at Canton's Senior Center at 500 Pleasant St., 7-9pm. The day is part of "International Overdoes Awareness Day" which aims to bring down the stigma of a drug related to deaths. Canton Alliance Against Substance Abuse is an organization that recognizes substance use disorder and works to support recovery and prevention. Harriet lost a son to an overdose in 2004.

What can communities like Canton do for its residents as it meets the challenges of severe weather due to climate change? Canton's Town Planner, Laura Smead, explains to CCTV's, Tanya Willow about Canton's updated "Master Plan" which, for the first time, contains strategies to deal with severe weather and limiting the community's C02 emissions. Through grants and computer modeling, realistic strategies to help Canton take on heat, flooding and extreme weather are being developed. What can the town ask of developers? Can changes in how roads and parking spaces are built help with heat and flooding? How do plants help with run-off and water pollution? Can cooling trees not on scenic ways be protected? What role does open space play in keeping residents cool and protected? Does Canton have cooling facilities if there is a long-term electrical outage? What is the town's short and long term plan to meet this difficult issue and what might Canton look like in 20, 30, even 50 years as a result of this challenge? An older gentlemen's arm was stuck under his flipped Kayak with his boots rapidly filling with water, his vest heavy with fishing gear.
